After Hours

Miles Davis. So What

Here's a very nice clip from 1959, which was, incidentally, the best year for jazz. After 1959, it was all downhill. This configuration of Coltrane/Kelly/Chambers/Cobb was arguably Davis' finest ensemble. There's another version of So What up with Shorter/Hancock/Carter/Williams from 1964. They just don't do it for me - especially Wayne Shorter. It always seems when I hear a tenor sax player I really don't like, it generally turns out to be Wayne Shorter - or Frank Foster. Anyhow, this is just a lovely bit of music history. I really like the rigorous informality of the session.
