Your Sunday Squirrel

A few months ago, I featured a picture of squirrel-bartender. Well, here's another one. I went to Denny Park a lot this week, but the heavy equipment was everywhere, so no squirrels. I saw three running around on Saturday, but there were some people with very, very large dogs who really wanted to chase those squirrels - to the point where they had to pin them to the ground. Consequently, the squirrels made themselves scarce - after I gave them all a peanut. And so the quest for a real squirrel photo continues.

Prade

Well, today was the Pride Parade - or Prade, as they say (OK, only I say that) and it went on for kind of forever. That's OK; there was a loud of proudness out there. Usually, I watch it from street level and take the best photos I can manage. This year, though, I watched it from an apartment just slightly above 4th Ave. Here are some of the highlights. Naked bikers: Puppy players - very, very, totally normal; people acting like dogs. Nothing to see here, folks: And everything else: It was pretty OK. People were excited. Just about everyone had a good time. Anyhow, happy Prade, everyone.

Your Sunday Squirrel

Here is a variant on last week's squirrel. It's the same one - only he's doing something slightly different! This week was terrible for squirrel spotting. Every time I went to Denny Park, there was some piece of noisy equipment there. Squirrels hate that. They're fine with cars, but not with leaf blowers or lawn mowers or concrete cutters. It's been quite a while since I could take an actual photo. I will try again this week. Wish me luck.

The Bastards!

Take a look at this, sweet people. You've seen this shot before. It usually looks like this: That's right, all those Mt. Fuji cherry trees have been cut down. Two days ago, they were still standing; today they're gone, hauled away, dead. They were around 40 years old from the look of them and originally planted to help sell Cadillacs. I guess they're developing the lot. But did they really have to cut them all down? This is really an awful thing. Every spring, they would just explode with blossoms. Like this: They were beautiful trees, but now there's no bringing them back. Look, I'm all for developing the holy living hell out of Belltown, but jeez, there are limits. These trees were neighborhood treasures. With absolutely no one caring for them, they managed to thrive. They put on a great show every spring. But not any more. Well, nice move, guys. Thanks a million. Now Belltown is just that much uglier.

Your Sunday Squirrel

Apologies once again for the lack of posts. I've been to Denny Park, but all the squirrels are skittish. Today I was hoping to go to the park to take some pictures, but I went to see Prometheus at the Cinerama. I really liked it, although it was kind of grim and just a little gruesome. Still, it was quite gorgeous to look at and it had quite a strange message. And yes, I believe there will be another installment, so that will be pretty interesting. You know, I loved the whole Alien series. Yeah, even the last two. And this new one is really encouraging. But I really have my doubts that we'll be capable of interstellar travel in 80 years. Here's a small spoiler: the planet they land on looks a lot like Scotland. That's all I'll tell you. Go see it.

Your Sunday Squirrel

Here's a squirrel doing what they hate most - waiting for a peanut while some human takes a picture. I was at Denny Park this morning and saw two squirrels. They were small and therefore very skittish. Only one wanted a peanut, and he was in no mood for the camera, so again we go to the archives. This fellow was quite cooperative and even a bit photogenic. It's my fault that I didn't get him centered in the shot. Still, the lack of balance is slightly interesting. Enjoy!

The Future Has Arrived

In the future, they told us, there will be no more liquor stores. You'll be able to buy strong booze anywhere. Someday, they said, this will be so, when everyone dresses in silver clothes and flies around in rocket-powered heli-cars. Well, it's finally happened - and a little earlier than expected. This is the former adult diaper/pet food aisle at my local Rite Aid:
Yes, quite the selection, isn't it? If I actually liked this stuff, it would probably have some impact on my life, but I've had the same bottle of Bacardi rum in my freezer for 10 years. My drink of choice remains cheap red wine. You can find that just one aisle over. But if you're a person who's overjoyed by the liquor liberation, then drink up. Personally, I'm happy to see liquor stores go. They were sad places. Now you can go to Rite Aid, buy some Old Grand Dad for yourself and ointment for your old grand dad. What could be more joyful than that? Welcome to the future, sweet people.
