What the heck does that say? I seem to recognize a D in there but little else. Yeah, it's not much to look at. But these storage people do not mess around. This bit of visual noise was gone in a day. Bravo, I say. The building across from me got its roof tagged something like two months ago and they still haven't done anything about it. I wish they were as speedy about clearing it up as the storage commandos. Anyhow, hats off to the consummate anti-taggers!

Graffiti B Gon
You know, the storage building's big red door at 3rd & Stewart offers a tempting canvas for any dumbass tagger. And indeed, they get tagged a lot, because as you know, everybody is interested in people who spray paint their names on things. Here's what their big red door looked like just a few days ago:

Yes, Zeb the Douchebag Is Really on Ice, Sweet People!

He was arrested in Seattle and then in Portland. It looks like the PDX charges will probably get him jail time. Just as long as the dumbass tagging stops, I'm a happy specimen. And yes, as you can see in the Smart Car post below, there is a Zeb tag on the building across the street. He got the metal screens over their windows. For some reason, they wiped those out, but did nothing about the little tag. What's the problem, folks, do you miss Zeb? I sure as hell don't. The sooner all traces of this douche are gone, the better.
So he's really in the slammer. That's some fine news.

Zeb: Busted!
Thanks to an anonymous poster, I learned that Belltown's most despised current graffiti douchebag, Zeb, was busted on the morning of July 14th. Check it out here. (They also nabbed a few idiots from Everett tagging, then photographing their work. Yeah, that's a special brand of stupid.) Apparently, he was caught in the process of scrawling his name for the millionth time on somebody's wall. Thanks, cops! Before that happened, he made these further contributions:

Those are located in Pioneer Square and Belltown. This guy must have spent a lot on paint, as I heard that he's sprayed far and wide - from Bellevue to Ballard and possibly beyond. Of course, Belltown, downtown and SLU bore the brunt of his impulses. Also mentioned in an earlier comment was the number he did on a building along Westlake. He really went to excess. It was completely unnecessary. Now his ass is gonna get all restituted. If any of your property was defaced by this douche, get into contact with the police. It's gonna be many a moon before this moron will be able to afford a can of paint.
And now, let's focus on the effort to erase all evidence of this creep. I suggest forming the Zeb Eradication Brigade, which will, somewhat ironically, be known as the ZEB. Seriously folks, I'm offering free labor to get rid of this awfulness. If anybody has better organizational skills than I do, make a plan and include me in it. OK? Death to Zeb! Long live ZEB!

More Douchery
Really Zeb, it's time to stop:

And this last one is really the limit:

Yeah, he tagged a tree. It's what all the kids are doing this year. Douche. Bag.
B23 left a comment in my previous Zeb post about him becoming even more hated than 3A. Well, that guy was just a minor nuisance in comparison. Just because you can scrawl your name on every inch of wall space doesn't mean you should. But try telling that to Zeb. Enough. Douche. Bag.

I Think Everyone Will Agree that Zeb Is a Douchebag
This plague started just a bit before I got back. In fact, it was one of the few new things I noticed after being away for six weeks. But now it's gotten waaaaay out of control. Something needs to be done about this guy. There's just too much spraying taking place. His work comes in two sizes; big...

...and small:

This is but a small sampling of what he's done. Not pictured is his defacement of the poor closed Lusty Lady and his other, myriad "contributions" to the Belltown landscape.
Here's my deal: we here in this neighborhood live with noise, both of the audio and visual varieties. There will always be a lot of both, but when there is an excessive amount of one or the other, you feel like something needs to be done. It's either that or go crazy. Has that car alarm been going off for the last three hours? Do something about it! Did those drunk people mashing under your window wake you up? Do something about it! Is this Zeb-nozzle making this neighborhood even uglier than it was? You get the idea. The thing is that in the past, I've singled out graffitists such as Scary Skull Guy and Eye Guy because I thought that their work had context. It wasn't just initials scrawled on a wall. Well, Zeb's stuff is just that - and we reached the saturation point weeks ago. Time to stop. Nobody gives a shit where you've been. You're a dumbass tagger making dumbass tags. Stop now. Belltown is not your canvas. Some graffiti does involved social commentary, but one thing is for sure: you're no Banksy. What you're doing is the human equivalent to a dog pissing on a tree. You're marking your territory. Belltown is not your territory. Stop now, OK? There are enough douchebags here throughout the week. One with a spray can is one too many.
And please, if anybody spots this mega-douche in action, kindly break his hands.

As Predicted...
The awful graffiti on the blockhouse of mystery at 4th & Battery has been eradicated. It is now available for more temporary demonstrations of self-expression.

Bad Graffiti of the Week
It's been a while since I've featured an individual work of bad graffiti. Well, it's about time, wouldn't you say? This particular creation exists at the corner of 4th & Battery, on the side of that blockhouse of mystery. Have a look:

You have all the hallmarks of bad graffiti here: the puffy "fart font" that was so popular in the seventies, the garish size and its illegibility. I've been looking at it for five minutes and I can't tell what it's supposed to say. Whatever it is, it needs to be expressed with an exclamation mark. The good news is that the blockhouse of mystery gets repainted once every few months, so it'll be covered over fairly soon. Then others can try and fail in the same spot.

Just Like That!
Wow, just a day after my screed on urban blight, one of my examples cleans up. This is the gem wholesaler across the street. Here's what it looked like yesterday and for the previous few months:

Here's how it is today:

How wonderfully non-blighted! Thanks for improving my view, Gem Center Northwest! And furthermore, I never knew that I wielded such power in this crummy neighborhood. But honestly, I'm sure it's just a coincidence. They were probably as sick of those awful tags as I was.

Fighting the Blight!
Even before the invention of writing, people have painted or scrawled things on walls, caves and rocks to show that walked upon the Earth. These days, the same thing happens, but it's a contributing factor to the blighted look of any urban landscape. You've seen it before - tag upon tag of indecipherable turns and squiggles that only make sense to other taggers. Belltown's surfaces get tagged perhaps more than any other Seattle neighborhood. As a resident, it's a little difficult to watch, because tags tend to accumulate. This is the building across the street from me:
Yeah, not pretty. If they don't do something about them, they'll continue to amass. But hey, these guys sort and grade gems, so maybe it's to their advantage to look low-rent. It attracts less attention. All I know is that it generally takes them months to deal with the tags. Many places have a much quicker reaction time: Cafe Zoe at 2nd & Blanchard, for instance. Back in September, they received this rather large gift:
The next day it was gone:
It was tagged again in November. The response was similar. It hasn't been tagged again. The Crocodile reacts similarly; they get rid of tags as quickly as possible. They haven't been tagged in months. So first off, using these two places as prime examples, eradicate the offending scrawls as quickly as possible. Taggers will find somewhere more permanent to lay down their paint and they'll keep away from your walls.
Here's another example of what happens when you ignore the problem and hope that it'll all magically vanish. The Cristalla is a condo high-rise at 2nd & Lenora. Last October, their rather stark south wall was host to some of the neighborhood's worst graffiti:
Yeah, that's about a hundred feet of badness. You'd think that the management would have sprung into action and done something about it immediately. After all, most of these higher-end condos and apartments sell themselves as urban oases. But they did nothing. More graffiti showed up:
More followed:
And so it remained for months. Finally, they did something about it:
They probably could have saved themselves time and effort if they had dealt with the initial batch of scrawls when it first appeared. But they didn't until their gleaming residence started looking like an abandoned building. And now the solution looks nearly as bad as the original problem. I guess they were waiting for another condo tower to go in next to them, but the way the economy is, that's not happening anytime soon, so at last they had to do something.
You'd think that with the wide variety of people wandering around, all thinking various thoughts and doing various things, that there's no point in having nice things within their reach. Actually, I've found the opposite to be true. Two examples: first, the doors of the Crocodile. Back in May, the newly-reopened Crocodile installed some very fancy door handles:
At the time, I remember thinking that something terrible was going to happen to them very soon. Not only to them, but to the doors they were attached to. Nothing of the sort has happened. They remain there unmolested; nobody has tried to pry them off or carve their initials into the doors or anything. The second example concerns the lowly traffic light utility box. You've seen them; they stand about so high and in Belltown, they are a constant attraction for stickers and tags. Well, late in the summer, the city started painting them. I'm not sure why it only involved a few of them in Belltown and downtown, but that's how it worked out. Here's one at 2nd & Virginia:
I took these pictures a while ago, but the scene is exactly the same. Nobody has messed with this box in months. Ordinarily, if it was painted the standard gray, it would be covered in tags and stickers. There are a few more of these boxes in the neighborhood and almost all have been left alone.
All of this leads me to conclude that common urban blight (i.e. graffiti and other visual noise) can be largely avoided by doing two things:
1. React quickly when graffiti shows up. Eradicate it immediately.
2. Don't be afraid to expose nice things, whether they're decorations, fixtures or artwork to the public. They'll hold up.
Most often, taggers will only mess with places that appear not to care. This neighborhood has its share of problems, but graffiti is avoidable.

This Also Happened - 2
The Grandview at 3rd & Blanchard got tagged!

What will we tell the children? Well, we can start with a tale of terrible graffiti. Even by the low, low standards of tagging, this is some terrible work. Hey Mr. Dumbass Tagger, life is short. Make your tags count. Of course, it was gone within a day and the Grandview appears to have never suffered such an indignation. It just looms there, indifferent to human suffering. Observe:

This is the first time I've noticed how very beige the place is. Sure, I've been aware that it's a beige building for some time now, but its beigeness didn't impact me until this moment. And now, its beigness seems an inspiration to all things beige in all parts of the world.

Problem Solved!
A few weeks ago, I showed some awful bad graffiti that sprayed on the side of Cafe Zoe here in the 2nd & Blanchard vortex. I claimed that they worked fast at Zoe to eradicate scrawlings of this type. Wow, did they ever. In fact, they were on it so quickly that I forgot that the offending puffy-looking thing had even been there, so I neglected to mention it. Well, now I'm mentioning it and here's your proof:

That shade of brown isn't the most attractive in world history, but it's functional at least.
This ties into my ringing criticism of the Cristalla, because this seems to be a lesson they haven't learned. Zoe gets rid of all graffiti almost immediately. It gets tagged once every three months or so. But it seems that dumbass taggers are trying less and less often, because they know their inferior efforts are quickly going to be wiped out. Contrast that with the Cristalla. It's just accumulating there. So yeah, my building might be old and weird, but at least the guys at Cafe Zoe have the neighborhood figured out. The Cristalla hasn't yet learned that lesson.

And It Continues...
I didn't think that my dire prediction of more and more and more tagging on the Cristalla would come to pass so quickly, but things happen when they happen. Here is the latest addition:

Yes, this dumbass tagger was in such need to express himself in spray paint and the drab gray south wall simply would not do, so now the facade of the building is fair game. I'm all for it. Dumbass taggers, have at it! The Cristalla management doesn't care. I mean, they've already conceded the entire south wall of their building to you. Anything you put up stays up, so why not start working the front of the place?
It seems that Cristalla still doesn't understand that graffiti accumulates. If they're that dim, then the place deserves to have dumbass tags going up on all 24 stories.

As Predicted...
Folks, I'm no mad street prophet. I merely predicted the future based on my past experience in Belltown. I knew that if the Cristalla did nothing about the horrid graffiti on their unattractive south wall, more horrid graffiti would follow. The prophesy has been fulfilled. Here's the wall a bit over a month ago:

Yes, lovely, isn't it? Well here's what it looked like as of this morning:

Even lovelier, no? Here's what the entire south wall of this multi-multi-million dollar condo building looks like:

It doesn't exactly exude class.
Let me reiterate the point of my first post: terrible graffiti accumulates. If you wipe it out quickly, dumbass taggers will eventually find another spot for their dumbass tags. Now, if I was a tenant of the Cristalla, I'd be all over maintenance to get rid of those tags. After all, the building charges maintenance fees, so why aren't they maintaining the appearance of the building? Yeah, I'd be kind of pissed off at them about now. I mean, what's next, panhandlers in the lobby? And like I previously said, even my old, creaky, perpetually-broke building is better at taking care of these problems than a big, rich, gleaming condo tower is. But hey, I don't live there. And thank God for that, because I'd totally be in major debt with condo payments and all. I just expect better things from more expensive places.

What Beautiful Artwork!
OK, I'm being sarcastic. It's a little tough to do in print unless you come right out and announce it like I just did. Anyhow, I finally got out of my hovel today after several days of pretty horrendous weather. To be honest, it's really cool watching all this storming and whatnot from the safety and relative comfort of my apartment, but when you're walking around out there amongst the storming and whatnot, it's not a pleasant experience. Anyway, coming back from Denny Park, I saw this on the side of Cafe Zoe right here at 2nd & Blanchard:

Yeah, now everybody knows this guy's name, whatever it is. But not for long. The Zoe crew is pretty quick about eradicating dumbass graffiti like this. The last time they got tagged, the offending scrawl was gone in two days. So now the clock is ticking. Let's see how long it takes to get rid of it. Hey, I've got all kinds of time. Stuff like this is fun for me.

No One Could Have Predicted...
...that when you leave Belltown's worst graffiti uneradicated...

...other efforts will follow:

It's a pretty well-understood urban rule that graffiti accumulates. If you don't wipe it out immediately, more will follow. You'd think that the property managers at the Cristalla would understand that, but no. They're merely surrendering the entire south face of their very expensive 24-story condo tower to taggers, graffitists and various other creators of visual noise. How much are their tenants paying per month in maintenance dues? Obviously, they're not getting their money's worth.
Yeah, I know that I've really been on the Cristalla's case since this post last week for the P-I, but they face the same set of problems as any other building in Belltown. It just seems that every other building is better at responding to those problems. Heck, even the Rivoli is more on the ball.
